In order to qualify for the clinical trial, you’ll go through a screening process that will include blood tests, a physical exam, and imaging, which will include a CT, MRI, and/or PET scans.
You or your loved one CAN join the clinical trial if you:
- Are at least 60 years old
- Have been diagnosed with head and neck cancer in the mouth, throat, or voice box
- Have not received any treatment for head and neck cancer, including surgery
- Are not able to have a certain type of chemotherapy
You or your loved one CANNOT join the clinical trial if you:
- Have head and neck cancer that is metastatic (has spread to other parts of your body far from the original tumor)
- Have head and neck cancer in your nose, sinus, salivary glands, or thyroid region
- Have previously received any treatment for head and neck cancer
The NANORAY-312 clinical trial includes 3 parts:
Screening (up to 4 weeks) : Before you join a clinical trial, the trial doctor and clinical staff will determine if you meet the specific requirements to participate. You will review and sign a document called an Informed Consent Form (ICF) that goes over the study details, as well as the potential risks and benefits of the study. You will also be able to ask any questions you have.
Treatment (9 weeks) : If you qualify for the trial, all participants will receive radiation therapy, and some participants will receive the investigational medication. You may also receive an additional targeted medication for head and neck cancer, called cetuximab. The trial doctor will help you determine if you should or should not receive this additional targeted medication.
You will be assigned at random to Group A or Group B. There is a 1 in 2 (50%) chance you will be assigned to either group.
Follow-up : Follow-up begins after the trial treatment ends. Follow-up visits help with your recovery and allow researchers to understand how the investigational medication and other treatments worked over a period of time. There are 2 parts to follow-up - standard follow-up and general status follow-up. Standard follow-up visits happen once every 3 to 6 months where imaging and other tests may be done. If your cancer gets worse, you will begin general status follow-up. These visits can be done over the phone where the trial doctor will review how you are feeling and any new treatments you are receiving for your head and neck cancer.
